Behaviour change programme

Behaviour change programme

Facts and figures

  • Our HQ building provides office accommodation for approximately 75 employees
  • Overall a 20 per cent reduction in electricity use, which includes the benefits of installing new energy efficient equipment, has been achieved during a period when employee numbers have increased

Why did we do this?

A significant reduction in energy consumption can be achieved by changing individual behaviour to avoid wasting energy and to use it more efficiently.

The benefits of reduced usage can be measured both as cost savings and as lower carbon footprint.

How did we do this?

Rolling the scheme at Interserve’s headquarters, we delivered a highly-visible campaign with a clear understanding from everyone about what was going to be achieved.

An Environmental Champion was appointed, who took responsibility for the design and checking of the change programme with departmental managers taking responsibility for local implementation.

Individual initiatives were explained and improvement targets agreed at meetings with all members of staff. Initiatives taken included; labelling light switches; increased use of network printers; default air conditioning temperature set to 23 degrees Celsius – instruction existing to open windows before using; and IT equipment turned off overnight and at weekends.

Benefits

  • 10 per cent reduction in electricity consumption
  • Annual savings 12,000 kg CO2
  • £1,500 annual saving
  • Reduced inventory of printers and associated cartridges
  • Changed behaviour transfer from work to home environment
