City and County of Swansea appointed Interserve to design and construct a new 20,000-seat sports stadium worth £27m at Morfa, Swansea.
The stadium is designed primarily for football and rugby amd incorporates internal changing rooms, toilets, bars, hospitality areas, offices and external works comprising roads, car parks, paths, landscaping and drainage.
We were chosen because the City and County of Swansea wanted the experience and capacity of a major contractor with a strong regional presence for its flagship project.
A major factor in the success of this tailored project was the effective use of our established regional supply chain, particularly the early involvement of key sub-contractors. Interserve has been undertaking major projects in Swansea for over 60 years.
The project required maximum co-operation between our designers and the stakeholders, principally the City and County of Swansea, the Ospreys and Swansea AFC.
The contract was signed in September 2003 and completed on time in March 2005 and to budget. The stadium provides year round benefit to all and has been extremely well received.
In conjuction with this project, we were awarded an additional £3.8m-contract for the relocation of the existing indoor and outdoor athletics facilities to King George V playing fields.
Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: "The construction of the stadium is a historic moment in Swansea's history. This fantastic stadium will put Swansea on the sporting map and give the city’s players and supporters a venue they deserve".
Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Development, said: “Interserve is a local company with a first class reputation for construction and working with the community. We are delighted with their appointment and their work on site”.
