HMP Garth was a significant contract to upgrade and enhance an existing Category B establishment through a combination of new build and refurbishment work.

The contract was executed through Interserve’s Strategic Alliance Agreement with the National Offender Management Service (NOMS) Custodial Property under the PPC2000 form of contract.

The new build element was constructed 'outside' the existing prison by the creation of a temporary secure perimeter. This included a 180-cell 'cranked' accommodation unit (houseblock) and an 'Activities' building housing a gymnasium, three workshops, a 12-room education suite, library and staff facility.

Refurbishment works are located within the existing operational area of the prison, and entail the upgrading of care and control (segregation), multi-faith, management suite, reception / discharge, visits and staff centre facilities.

The contract also benefited from advances in legislation and life cycle issues, and to date rain water harvesting and an 'interseasonal heat transfer' systems were incorporated through design together with initiatives including BREEAM and the Waste Resource Advisory Programme (WRAP).

Whilst Interserve has been procured through the Strategic Alliance Agreement with NOMS, we have also assumed additional roles and responsibilities including Client Representative and Planning Supervisor together with employing the full design team, and have had involvement from the outset of the contract to improve programme delivery and add value to the contract.
