In constructing 21 hybrid industrial units for Priority Sites in Bootle, Interserve has played a key role in incorporating renewable energy sources as well as minimising disruption to local people.

Priority Sites is a joint venture company formed by the Royal Bank of Scotland and English Partnerships. It specialises in the revitalisation of brownfield sites in England’s regeneration areas, developing new business space in business parks, city centres and other areas. Cost of ownership for tenants and environmental impact are key considerations for the company so Interserve’s proven expertise in renewable energy and considerate construction played a key role in the success of this design and build project.

Features and benefits

  • Supply and installation of 46 1.5kW wind turbines to meet 10 per cent of the energy demands of most of the units, combined with a 20kW turbine for the single largest unit. The latter is capable of generating surplus electricity for sale back to the grid.
  • As well as supplying wind energy, Interserve took an active role in liaising with the local planning authority to ensure compliance with all of the criteria for the wind turbines.
  • A combination of dynamic compaction ground improvement technique and conical base formers to create depressions for foundation bases was used instead of conventional piled foundations and machine excavation solution. This eliminated the need to dispose of surplus materials off-site, thus reducing embedded energy and minimising disturbance to neighbouring properties.
